The ‘Parco delle Mura’ of Genoa, in addition to being the green lung of the city, also presents a wide variety of fauna, allowing the luckiest visitors to often have special encounters along the many paths that connect the Forts.
Among the mammals that might be encountered are roe deers, fallow deers, foxes, but also badgers, stone martens and porcupines. There is no shortage of wild boars and, in more recent years, also wolves, which after a long period of extinction in the entire region have slowly started to populate some mountainous areas of Liguria since the 1990s.
Among the reptiles we can count instead the slow worm, the green lizard, the rat snake and some species of colubers and asps. But among the most evocative experiences that you can have within the Park there is certainly birdwatching, which allows the visitor to admire jays, goshawks, kestrels, buzzards, harriers, but also nocturnal birds of prey such as tawny owls, little owls and long-eared owsl.
However, if we are not lucky enough to have close encounters, we can still discover the wealth of fauna around the Forts by finding the traces left by the animals, just like nature detectives finding footprints, feces, feathers, tufts of fur, nests etc.
In any case it is always good practice, if you encounter wildlife, not to interfere with their activities, not only to avoid disturbing the animals, but also to avoid putting yourself in risky situations for your own safety.
