The ‘Parco delle Mura’ represents for Genoa a system of exceptional historical and landscape value. The fortified elements and the Walls, in a V shape open towards the sea, follow the ridge of the mountains behind the city and represent a suggestive element that characterizes the horizon from the sea towards the hinterland.
The ridges and forts identify the natural limit within which the historic city developed and form the framework of a broader system that includes historical routes and artefacts, green areas in direct contact with the ancient city and portions of territory that are still agricultural, as the entire Val Polcevera used to be for a long time, its peasant traditions celebrated right in the rooms of the MuCe - Museum Certosa di Genova. The route of the Genoa-Casella railway line, inaugurated in 1929, finally defines the eastern limit of the Park.
The Fort system became a Protected Natural Area of Local Interest in 2008 and protects 617 hectares of territory; it dominates highly panoramic slopes from which splendid views of the port and the city can be appreciated which allow the visitor to reconstruct the history of the development of the city of Genoa from an urban planning and landscape point of view.
Today the Park constitutes a large green lung with a lush and diversified natural environment. On its slopes the woodland formations are characterized by an important variety of broad-leaved trees and conifers among which we distinguish the following species: Black Hornbeam, Manna Ash, Holm Oak, Downy Oak, Stone Pine, Aleppo Pine, Cypress. There are also field maples, wild blackthorns, hawthorns and wild pears.
Walking towards the top of the park, the scrub and the woods are replaced by lower vegetation made up predominantly of meadows and shrubs, giving an open view of the city and the sea that is increasingly breathtaking!
We thank the Hydrogeology, Geotechnics and Valleys Directorate of the Municipality of Genoa for their precious collaboration and for providing part of the texts.
